Engagement Photo Sessions

“Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale”

In this weeks blog I am writing about engagement sessions and why I think they are important.

Your engagement session is usually your first official portrait session together, and will probably be the most beautiful photographs you’ll have taken of yourselves before your wedding day. You’ll no doubt look back at these images in a few years time remembering this time of excitement and happiness. These photographs will be special to you both, and i want to make sure that you are fully prepared for your session with some handy tips and tricks below.

Engagement sessions or pre-wedding sessions are one of my favourite sessions to photograph. The main reason why I like them so much is because the session is relaxed and helps you both see how I work behind the camera. If you are not a lover of having your portrait taken this will help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. It will help enormously on your wedding day and will be one less thing to worry about.

What can I do with these images?
These are images that you can have printed and framed to show around your home and you can also use them for your save the dates. You can use your favourite image on a card, magnet or how ever you would like to announce your wedding day, and this also leaves your family or friends with a special keepsake.

Where do we go for the session?
Choosing the right location is also important, I recommend a few places that look great for this type of session however if you both have a special location unique to you both then that is where I recommend we should go.

What do I wear?
Choosing outfits that complement one another is also important, feeling comfortable is of huge importance as you want to feel confident and relaxed during the session but remember and style it up! Also choose an outfit that will also complement your location as you don’t want to be wearing high heels and walking through snow/ up a hill etc. If you are an outdoors and adventurous couple going to the highlands and wearing some nice boots, jackets, scarfs and hats is always ideal. Or if you wedding venue is your special location dressing in casual wear is also perfect.

When is best to do the session?
Which season would you like shoot in? My preferred season is autumn because of all the beautiful vibrant colours however I do recommend that you do your session at a different point in the year from your wedding day. If you are having a winter wedding I suggest late summer the beginning of autumn as this gives a different look from your wedding images.

Pinterest is great for planning ahead!
Another great idea is to set up a Pinterest board together of engagement images that you both like and find collages of colours and clothes to compliment one another! I will attach some ideas below as this helps to guide you in the right direction in creating beautiful memories.

We have a dog can we bring him/her?
Yes! bring along your pet to the session after all they are part of the family and pets always make great photographs.

Will my every day look be okay?
And lastly Hair and make up! Have you booked your hairdresser and mua? This could also be a great opportunity to use your trial session from your hairdresser and Mua. Most of my couples do this as they want to see how there make up and hair photographs. Doing this at your engagement session is a perfect way to see how you would look on your wedding day. However if you are not this far on in your planning don’t worry your every day look will be absolutely perfect.

I have attached some images through out this post from sessions that I have done over the years. I hope they help you visualise how your own session could go and I hope you have found this helpful.

Loads of love,
Lauren.
